Concepts.

1st concept.

mouse concept2 M7.jpg

The first concept is a mouse, it is shaped in such a way that it fits comfortably in the hands of its user. This also makes it so that it is only logical to put a hand on it in one way which the user would be able to quickly find without being able to see. This results in the user not mistaking one button for another and being able to easily start using the product.
The mouse makes navigating through a computer in general much faster and easier, which means it also helps its user to navigate through the file explorer. It has different buttons which can: scroll up and down, select a folder or file, a button that creates a new file or folder and a button which would switch between to-dos and notes.

2nd concept.

The second concept is a drawing pad, and it would function more as an actual notebook. This is to bring back the feeling of actually taking a quick note on a piece of paper, which is much simpler and faster than doing it on a laptop. It works in the way that the user could write or draw on the screen, which would recognize the handwriting and turn into typed text. To make the placement and filing of the written note easier and faster than using a screen reader, the buttons are added. A switch to differentiate between notes and to-dos, and four buttons to categorize the text after which it can be placed in a subheader.

3rd concept.

The third concept is a watch which would be worn around the wrist of the user. The watch would be used in combination with an application especially designed for the product. This means the product would be connected with a laptop or other device and make opening, starting and reviewing notes and to-dos much easier and faster. First select notes or to-dos, then use the scroll bar to select the desired category after which a subheader is chosen, finally a new file can be opened or an older one reviewed and/or edited.

Concept choice.

After coming up with the three concepts, a co-design session with the user was planned. As the user could not review the concepts visually, physical prototypes were made and shown to the client. This allowed the specific user to evaluate each design by touch and give further input into how to further develop the concept he found the most desirable and suited to the problem. Instead of using a cardboard model for the initial drawing pad idea, it was decided to use an iPad to test the user’s handwriting as it is a very similar design and to use a cardboard touch pad example of the buttons that would be alongside the drawing pad.

The specific user liked the third concept the most, this is mostly because of its portability which is very convenient for him as he travels a lot. The watch would also be around his wrist making it more difficult to forget or lose the product. He further suggested a record button making it possible to record his own voice, hear it back later and type the note out. The drawing pad seemed like a great addition to his daily life but after trying his handwriting on an iPad it seemed not good enough for the software to recognize it. Furthermore, he thought the pad had too many options which would combat the speed and ease of use.

Finally the mouse concept, his opinion was that it is very comfortable and easy to use. Placing your hand on it is very logical and makes there is no confusion in the different buttons. The problem with this concept is the ability to take it along with you. The user makes a lot of use of the train, and such a mouse is difficult to use in such a setting. He liked all the concepts but because of the lack of portability in concept two and three it would be redundant to have both a watch and for example the mouse.

After doing a point evaluation comparing all three concepts with each of the requirements, we can conclude that the third concept fits the requirements the most. This is a logical conclusion since the requirements were made with the user’s best interests and adjusted to his needs. This is why it is only logical the user would prefer the same concept as the point evaluation.
